Good evening, TERA Fans! Thanks to TERA Fans member Airwolfe591 I've been alerted to Ten Ton Hammer's coverage of the TERA team's community party last night at Comic Con 2010, including a video and a screenshot of the updated character creator.

New Character Creator

New Character Creator.                 Old Character Creator.

This new character creator screenshot contains a few more options than the old one.

  • Sliders: We initially saw character creation sliders in May via a video released by TERA's official Korean website. In this screenshot they are translated.
  • Addition of "presets" and "outfit" tabs. While the presets tab may be self explainatory, I wonder which "outfits" you're able to choose!
  • The adjustment of "details" to "features". This is probably the tab for things like horns and jewelry.

From what I can see on the video, there were two major announcements last night.

Glyph System
  • The glyph system is going to be one way players will be able to customize their characters.
  • Glyphs are meant to alter skills by either reducing their cooldowns, adding additional critical chance rate or increasing their damage output.
  • There will be 20 glyphs available to choose from for each class upon the game's release.
  • They will be obtainable through questing.
  • It will be easy to change which glyphs you have activated, but there will be a limit on how many glyphs you may have active at any time.

Achievement System
  • TERA will launch with an achievement system.
  • Currently there are achievements for things like joining your first group or dying for the first time.
  • The system is still very much under development.

Check out the video from Ten Ton Hammer below, demonstrating the glyph and achievement systems!

UI Changes

In the video, you may also have noticed the modified UI. From what I can see, the UI in the video is much less minimalistic, including graphic icons at the bottom of the screen. Here is a comparison between the old UI and the new one.

Woot, I got mentioned!

The new UI reminds me of the Mac, with the icons on the bottom. I actually like it and I think it'll make things a bit easier and faster to access. I can't wait to play with the glyph system and see what other class diversifying system(s) they'll put in.

Edit: Also, I want to know more about the outfits feature, I think it'll come down to two things, either a preview of future armor sets, or maybe a clothing feature that 'covers' your armor.

Do achievements do anything? Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with the concept and they didn't explain it.

The glyphs sound like tactics in WAR which I liked.

I'm liking those character customization options. I, too, wonder what "outfits" means. It may be like Aion where you can just preview your toon in different tiers of game armor.

It's usually different from game to game, they could be like consoles where there just extra things to do or they could unlock something that slightly modify your stats. I'm not sure what they're going for here, but it's gonna keep me busy during down time when not PvPing or going through instances.

Sounds like how Achievements in wow worked, pretty much shinies to show off to clan mates ;) Good stuff, they are fun to catch 'em all.

Glyphs also sound like they are similar to WoW's glyph system, thats not a bad thing, and im sure they're making it better ;p. Glyphs check, enchanting check, item sockets check. Things are looking for for customization!

Outfits sounds like it'll be pretty cool too, cant wait!

The glyph system sounds like a nice addition though I hope later down the road we'll get a little more than 20 maybe in a patch or something.

I'm also glad we are getting achievements. Even if we end up not getting any rewards with them I think it's great to have a few extra things to accomplish on the side.

WTB FGT3!

Joke aside, the party must have been fun. Achievements ay, wonder if they give you any stat bonuses etc. or as Elyia mentioned, it's just a show off feature :teehee:
The new UI and customization screen rock :3

I like the old UI better. No idea why they thought giant MacOSX icons right under your character is actually better, but I like the simple thin bar at the bottom much more. Either way I hope they can be removed. I like to keybind those UI windows anyway.

Also is this glyph thing our method of specializing our class? Or is it like WoW where its an added extra to further customize your toon?

To be honest I guess I was expecting a bit more from TERA in this department. I would rather have had a talent system like in WoW or perhaps a mastery system like in Titan Quest if anyone of you guys are familiar with it. The Glyph system sounds mediocre at best. Right now it's just too simplistic and I was hoping that you would also be able to give your skills major changes, not just boring and minor changes like added damage, shorter cooldowns and crit rate :/

We still have a half a year until release, if not longer, I highly doubt that this will be the only thing. I think that they'll add one more system to diversify classes, they already have the Enhancement Crystals and now Glyphs, they'll more than likely take the criticism and suggestions that the community is giving. Plus, they said they'll have more glyphs than what was said and they haven't shown all the Crystals either, so they probably still have things up their sleeves.

I would like to see an achievement like "lasted 10 levels without a death"

Hopefully difficult achievements will unlock unique titles. Like in Guild Wars the Survivor title was unlocked by reaching level twenty without dying once.

Very nice, very nice indeed.

Achievements will add an extra level of depth to the game, and whilst in WoW I don't go out of my way to get achievements, it's always really nice when you are just doing something random or what you would normally do and you get the surprise of completing that achievement. The Achievement UI looked a lot (a lot) like the one from wow, and that's not a bad thing, because it works well, and people will look at it as something they already understand. You could see there were already lots of achievements and categories of achievements in game.

The glyph system is a little less impressive (imo). At first I was thinking, oh cool, Glyphs. But in reality I think these are talent points... except you unlock the talents as quest rewards...? I think that's how I understood it. I like having a Talent Tree, and choice of Trees/Talents. I think that works well, not sure how this system will work, seems a little restrictive atm, but then it's far too early to tell.

Either way they are adding levels of class customization which is very important, and the achievements are a really nice addition to bring flavor to the game.

P.S. I really like the new UI, from the little we could see. Looks like they got rid of a lot of the unnecessary 'fluff' and made it more minimalist in appearance.

I agree with you guys ideas, that would be pretty cool, but small first time doing something achievements are fine too I suppose. I like achievements, they give me something to do when I'm bored and don't feel like just questing. Good new news, actually something I didn't know about! Just really hope they announce FGT3 soon >_<

They also said it would be fully customizable, whatever that might mean. Likely it means if you don't like some of the gadgets on your ui you can move, reduce, or remove them. It's reallly coming together!

I hope there will be an option to play with the old UI for us old schoolers who are used it :)
